Replying
What to say back to a manipulative text
Keep it short, say what you mean once, and don't try to win the argument by text. Long explanations give the other person more to pick apart. Decide what you want the reply to do (end the topic, hold a limit, or keep things warm) and choose a calm, firm or kind tone to match. Sometimes the best reply is none.
Before you reply
- Wait a little. A reply written while you're upset usually says more than you meant.
- Name what's happening, to yourself. Is your memory being questioned? Is a complaint being turned around on you? Knowing the pattern makes it easier not to get pulled in. How to spot red flags in texts.
- Pick one goal. End the topic, hold a limit, or keep the relationship warm. One reply can't do all three.
Three tones, three examples
Say you're told that the plan you both agreed on was your idea alone, and that you're to blame for it falling through.
- Calm: “I remember it differently. Let's figure out what to do now instead of who's to blame.”
- Firm: “We decided that together. I'm not going to argue about it over text.”
- Kind: “I can tell you're frustrated, and so am I. Can we talk about it tonight?”
All three are short, don't over-explain and don't accept blame that isn't yours.
What usually makes it worse
- The long defense. Paragraphs of justification invite more argument.
- Matching the tone. Sarcasm and insults hand over the moral high ground.
- Endless back-and-forth. If the same point comes back a third time, it's fine to stop replying on that topic.
When not to reply
If replying only restarts the same fight, or you've decided to step back from the relationship, silence is a reply too. See getting through no contact.
