Export guides
How to export your chats
To look at a conversation as a whole, you first need a copy of it in a file. Each messaging app does this differently, and some make it hard. These guides walk through the current steps for each app, checked against its own help pages, and say what to do when there is no export.
- WhatsAppFour taps on Android: ⋮ › More › Export chat › Without media. You can share the file straight to Clarity.
- Facebook MessengerMeta's Export your information tool for older chats, plus a separate download for end-to-end encrypted ones.
- Instagram DMsUse Export your information in Accounts Center, choose only Messages in JSON, and download the ZIP.
- Android text messages (SMS)Android has no built-in export. The free SMS Backup & Restore app saves a conversation as an XML file.
- TelegramOnly Telegram Desktop can export. Open the chat, choose Export chat history, and pick JSON.
- SignalSignal's new export saves every chat as JSON. For Clarity, screenshots are the way in for now.
Import the file into Clarity
Clarity is a free Android app that reads the file you export and shows where patterns like gaslighting, love bombing and DARVO appear, with the messages behind every flag. Pattern detection runs on your phone.
