Export guide

How to export your Facebook Messenger messages

Messenger has no "export this chat" button. Instead, request a copy of your messages with Meta's Export your information tool: in Facebook, go to Settings & privacy › Settings › Meta Account (or Accounts Center) › Your information and permissions, choose only Messages and the JSON format, and download the ZIP when Meta says it's ready. Chats that are end-to-end encrypted, which is most personal chats since Meta switched them over starting in December 2023, are stored separately and need a second download from a computer.

Export your Messenger messages

These are the steps in the Facebook app on Android. On a computer the menus have the same names.

  1. Open Settings. In the Facebook app, tap Menu, then Settings & privacy › Settings.
  2. Find the export tool. Tap Meta Account or Accounts Center (Meta is moving people between the two), then Your information and permissions › Export your information.
  3. Start an export to your device. Tap Create export, pick your Facebook profile, tap Next, then Export to device.
  4. Choose only Messages, in JSON. Customize the export: select only Messages, set the date range (All time if you want everything), and choose the JSON format. Lower media quality keeps the file small.
  5. Start it and wait. Tap Start export. Meta sends an email and a notification when the file is ready, which can take from minutes to days.
  6. Download within 4 days. Go back to Export your information, open Available downloads and download the ZIP. Meta asks for your password first.
  7. Import it. In Clarity, tap Import File and choose the ZIP. You don't need to unzip it.
One file, many conversations. The ZIP has a folder for every conversation in your account, and Clarity imports each one it finds. To bring in a single conversation, unzip the file (Files by Google can do this), find the inbox folder inside messages, open the folder named after the person, and import that folder's message_1.json file, plus message_2.json and so on if there are more.

End-to-end encrypted chats

Meta began making personal Messenger chats end-to-end encrypted by default in December 2023. Messages from before a chat was switched over are in the export above, often in a folder called e2ee_cutover. Newer messages in encrypted chats are kept in Messenger's secure storage instead, and Meta only lets you download them on a computer:

  1. On a computer, open facebook.com and click Messenger at the top right.
  2. Next to Chats, click Options, then Chat history.
  3. Click Last backup, then Download chat backup.

This only works if secure storage was turned on for your chats. We haven't yet confirmed that Clarity can read this backup file. If the import doesn't work, screenshots of the recent part of the conversation are a fallback: on Android, select them all in Import File and Clarity reads the text on your phone.

Good to know

Then see what the conversation shows

Clarity is a free Android app that reads the file you export and shows where patterns like gaslighting, love bombing and DARVO appear, with the messages behind every flag, a health score and a timeline. Pattern detection runs on your phone.

Questions

Can I export a single Messenger conversation?

Not directly. Meta's Export your information tool exports all your messages at once. The ZIP has one folder per conversation, so you can unzip it and use only the folder for the conversation you want.

Why are my recent Messenger messages missing from the export?

Most personal Messenger chats are now end-to-end encrypted, and those messages are kept in secure storage rather than in the regular export. On a computer, open Messenger on facebook.com, click Options next to Chats, then Chat history, Last backup and Download chat backup.

How long does a Messenger export take?

Meta notifies you by email and in the app when the file is ready. Small exports can be ready in minutes, while large ones can take much longer. Once it is ready, you have 4 days to download it.

Should I choose HTML or JSON?

JSON. Meta describes it as the machine-readable format for moving your information to another service, and it keeps exact timestamps. HTML is easier to read in a browser.
