Red flag guides
Red flags in text messages
Manipulation is easier to see in a pattern than in a single message. These guides explain common patterns in plain language, show what they can look like in a real chat, and say what you can do about them. Everyone has bad days; what matters is what keeps happening.
- GaslightingMaking you doubt your own memory or judgment: denying what happened, rewriting events, calling you confused.
- Love bombingOverwhelming attention, flattery and big promises early on, with pressure to commit before trust has had time to build.
- DARVODeny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender: when you raise a problem, you end up being treated as the one who did wrong.
- BreadcrumbingJust enough attention to keep you hoping (a flirty text, a vague "we should hang out") with no real follow-through.
- HooveringAttempts to pull you back after a breakup or distance: sudden apologies, nostalgia, "emergencies", messages through friends.
- Future fakingVivid promises about trips, moving in or changing, made to keep you invested, which keep getting pushed back.
- TriangulationBringing a third person into the picture, an ex, a friend, a parent, to create jealousy, competition or pressure.
- StonewallingShutting down, going silent or refusing to engage when something needs to be talked about.
- Guilt trippingUsing guilt, sacrifice and disappointment to pressure you into saying yes.
- Blame shiftingMoving responsibility onto you: their reaction was caused by you, the problem is how you asked, the real issue is something you did.
- Hot and cold behaviorSwinging between intense warmth and sudden distance, so you never know which version you will get.
- IsolationGradually cutting you off from friends, family and other support, often framed as love or protection.
- Financial controlUsing money to control you: restricting access, monitoring spending, sabotaging work or running up debt in your name.
- NeggingBackhanded compliments and "jokes" that chip away at your confidence so you seek their approval.
- Covert aggressionHostility disguised as politeness, jokes, concern or "just being honest", so it is hard to name or call out.

Clarity is a free Android app that reads a chat you export from WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, SMS and other apps and shows where these patterns appear, with the messages behind every flag. It looks at language, not intent, so treat what it finds as a starting point, not a verdict.
