How we build Clarity
We read 1,403 reviews of apps like ours. Here’s what we fixed.
Before redesigning Clarity, we read 1,403 Google Play reviews of 15 apps that analyze relationships and text conversations, including our own. The most common complaint was paying before seeing anything. The most-agreed ones were being asked for a rating before using the app, and private chats going to a server. Below is each complaint, with the numbers and a real quote, and what Clarity does about it.
How we did it
On October 24, 2026 we pulled the reviews Google Play returned for 15 apps in this space: 1,401 reviews of 14 other apps and 2 of Clarity. We sorted the 355 one- and two-star reviews of the other apps by topic, first by keywords and then by reading them. A count below is the number of reviews that mention a topic; one review can mention several. “Helpful votes” are the thumbs-up other people gave a review on Google Play. Reviews are individual opinions, and these apps may have changed since.
You pay before you see anything
117 of the 355 one- and two-star reviews, across 8 apps, with 662 “helpful” votes between them. The biggest complaint by far.

What Clarity does
Your first conversation is checked for free, start to finish: the score out of 100, the red flags with the messages behind them, the good signs and the chat stats. Nothing is blurred, and no quiz ends at a price screen. You also get three AI reports free. Pro adds more conversations, more AI help and the detailed reports.
Asked to rate the app before using it
Only two reviews mention it, but one of them is the most-agreed review we read: 120 people marked it helpful.

What Clarity does
Clarity asks once, and only after you've used it: after your second AI report or a five-day check-in streak. It uses Google Play's own rating box, which you can close, and it doesn't ask again.
Paid, and got errors or nothing
67 reviews across 7 apps describe crashes, endless loading or errors, often after paying.

What Clarity does
If an AI report fails, it isn't counted against your allowance, and the message says so and gives our support address. Before this release we imported test chats on an Android phone in every format we read: WhatsApp (text file and zip), Instagram, Messenger, Android text-message backups and screenshots, and fixed what we found. For very long chats the score uses every message; the app keeps the first 200 and the latest 4,800 to read and search, and tells you when it has done that.
Your private chat goes to someone’s server
Seven reviews, but they carry 337 helpful votes. Chat Analyzer’s two most-agreed one-star reviews are about this.

What Clarity does
Pattern detection runs on your phone, and screenshots are read on your phone. Your conversations are saved to a private, anonymous account so you can come back to them, or kept in memory only if you turn on Volatile Mode. They go to an AI only when you ask for an AI report, and then only as a summary: pattern statistics and up to 20 short excerpts (200 characters at most) from the flagged messages, never the full conversation. Smart Search, an optional Pro feature, sends a conversation's text only after you tap Index on it. The details are in our privacy policy.
Nobody answers, no refund
19 reviews across 8 apps.

What Clarity does
The support address, support@clarityforensics.app, is in Settings, on the upgrade screen and on error screens. A person reads it, including about a charge you didn't expect or a refund.
Weekly subscriptions
12 reviews across 4 apps mention weekly prices, with 103 helpful votes.
“Doesn't show you anything with purchasing premium for $4/week.”
What Clarity does
There is no weekly plan. Pro is monthly, or a one-time lifetime purchase with no subscription. Prices come from Google Play, you pay through Google Play, and you can cancel there anytime.
Free features taken away later
Two long-time Lovewick users wrote about features that used to be free, with 23 helpful votes between them.

What Clarity does
What's free in Clarity stays free: checking a conversation, the score, red flags, chat stats, the daily check-in and the day counter. If we add something new to Pro, it won't be something you already had for free.
Hard to get the chat into the app
19 reviews across 5 apps mention importing, uploading or exporting chats.
What Clarity does
Tap “Import a chat”, pick the app the messages are in, and Clarity shows the export steps for it. The same steps are on our export guides. If an app won't export, screenshots work too.
What people liked, and we added
- A counter you can see. One No Contact reviewer called its day tracker “a goal you can see”; another objected to paying for it. Clarity’s day counter (for example, days of no contact) is free, with a start date you choose.
- A small reason to come back. Lovewick’s reviewers enjoy its daily questions. Clarity has a one-tap daily check-in with a streak that doesn’t scold you when it breaks.
- Help with the reply. A Toxicity reviewer liked replies suggested “in a specific tone so messages won’t be misinterpreted”. Clarity’s “How should I reply?” and “Safe to send?” give calm, firm or kind versions.
- Simple chat stats. Chat Analyzer, mostly a stats app, has 500,000+ installs. Every Clarity result shows who texts more, who starts conversations and how fast each person replies.
- Easy to read. People praise clean, simple apps. Clarity 1.6 puts the result in plain words up front and has a larger text setting.
What we haven’t fixed yet
- Clarity is in English only. Spanish and Portuguese are next.
- Messenger’s separate end-to-end encrypted chat backup and Signal’s full-history export aren’t read yet. Screenshots work for both.
- Clarity reads language, not intent. It can miss context, and a score is a starting point, not a verdict.
