Red flag guide
Negging: when compliments come with a sting
Negging is a backhanded compliment or "joke" that carries a small insult, meant to lower someone's confidence so they try harder to win approval. The term comes from 2000s pickup-artist culture, where it was taught as a dating tactic. In texts it shows up as praise with a catch, comparisons that sting, or teasing that keeps landing on the same insecurity. It is an informal term with no formal research definition. What matters is whether you regularly come away from the conversation feeling smaller.
Signs of negging in texts
- Praise with a catch. A compliment followed by "for someone like you", "for once" or "honestly surprised".
- Teasing that targets a soft spot. The joke keeps landing on your weight, job, family or age.
- "It's just a joke." When you say it hurt, the problem becomes your sense of humor.
- Comparisons. You are measured against other people, and come up a little short.
- Approval that moves. Whatever you change, there's always one more thing.

Negging or friendly teasing?
| Friendly teasing | Negging pattern |
|---|---|
| Goes both ways and both people laugh. | Goes one way, and you're the only one not laughing. |
| Stops when you say it hurt. | Continues, or the problem becomes your sensitivity. |
| Leaves you feeling closer. | Leaves you working harder for approval. |
What you can do
- Take the compliment apart. Ask yourself what the sentence would mean without the "joke" part.
- Say it once, plainly. "That came across as an insult. Please don't." How they respond tells you a lot.
- Don't audition. You don't need to prove you deserve the compliment.
- Notice the early-dating version. Negging in the first messages on a dating app is a reason to move on.
- Watch for escalation. Put-downs that grow into contempt or control are a bigger warning sign.

Questions
What does negging mean in dating?
Negging is giving someone a backhanded compliment or mild insult on purpose, so they feel less confident and more eager for your approval. The term comes from pickup-artist culture in the 2000s.
Is negging a red flag?
Yes. Even if it is meant as playful, a habit of compliments that put you down shows a willingness to lower your confidence to gain an edge. If it continues after you say it hurts, take that seriously.
How do I respond to a backhanded compliment?
You can ignore it, ask what they meant, or name it once: that came across as an insult. You don't owe a long explanation, and you don't have to keep talking to someone who keeps doing it.
