Red flags

How to spot red flags in text messages

A single harsh message is rarely the problem. A red flag is something that keeps happening: your memory is questioned again and again, an apology always ends with it being your fault, or warmth arrives only after you pull away. You find it by reading the conversation as a whole, not one text at a time.

Why it's hard to see in the moment

Chats arrive one message at a time. Each one can be explained away, and after a while you start to doubt your own reading. Scrolling back months later, the pattern is often obvious. That's the point of looking at the whole thread.

What to look for

  • Your memory is the problem. Things you remember clearly are denied, or your reactions are treated as the real problem. Gaslighting.
  • Too much, too soon, then cold. Huge affection early, followed by withdrawal when you set a limit. Love bombing and hot and cold.
  • Every complaint turns around. You raise one thing and end up apologizing for something else. DARVO and blame-shifting.
  • Guilt as a lever. Saying no is treated as proof that you don't care. Guilt-tripping.
  • Silence as punishment. Long stretches of no reply after a disagreement. Stonewalling.
  • Fewer people around you. Friends and family are slowly framed as the enemy. Isolation.

Everyone has bad days. What matters is how often something happens and whether it gets worse over time.

How to check a whole conversation

  1. Get the chat out. Export it from WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Telegram or your SMS app (step-by-step guides), or just take screenshots.
  2. Read it in order, start to finish. Note the date each time something on the list above happens.
  3. Look at the timeline, not single lines. Is it rare, regular, or getting more frequent?

Let Clarity read it for you

Clarity is a free Android app. Import a whole chat or add screenshots, and it gives the conversation a score out of 100 and shows the messages behind every red flag, with a timeline. Or paste a single message for an instant read. It looks at language, not intent, so treat what it finds as a starting point, not a verdict. Your first conversation is free, start to finish.
