Going no contact: getting through the first weeks
No contact means no texts, calls, replies or checking their profiles for a set time, so you can think clearly without being pulled back in. The first weeks are the hardest. It helps to count the days, decide in advance what you'll do when you want to reach out, and keep a record of why you left for the moments you start to doubt it.
Why the first weeks are the hardest
A relationship that swung between warmth and coldness can feel impossible to leave, because the good moments stand out more than the bad ones. Once contact stops, your mind fills the silence with the best memories. That pull is normal. It isn't proof that leaving was wrong.
When you want to reach out
- Wait 20 minutes. Most urges fade if you don't act on them right away.
- Write it, don't send it. Put the message in a notes app instead.
- Re-read the reasons. Look at what actually happened, not how you remember it on a lonely night.
- Tell someone. A friend who knows the story can remind you of it.
If they reach out with a sudden apology or promise after you've gone quiet, that's common too. See hoovering.
When you start doubting why you left
Memory softens things. The chat history doesn't. Reading the conversation start to finish, or having it checked, shows what kept happening, with dates. That record can steady you when the doubt is loud. How to spot red flags in texts.
When full no contact isn't possible
If you share children, a home or a workplace, keep contact short, factual and in writing, about practical things only. That's sometimes called low contact or grey rock.
Count the days and keep the record
Clarity is a free Android app. Its day counter shows how many days it's been since a start date you choose, and a one-tap daily check-in shows how you've been feeling over the week. Both are free and saved on your phone. When the doubt comes back, import the old chat and see the messages behind every red flag. Your first conversation is free, start to finish.
