Comparison
Clarity vs ChatGPT for analyzing your texts
ChatGPT is a general assistant: paste in some messages and you can talk them through, ask follow-up questions and get advice in your own words. Clarity is built for one job: it reads a whole conversation, finds patterns like gaslighting or DARVO with the same method every time, and shows the messages behind each one, with dates. Pattern detection runs on your phone. Many people use both: Clarity to see what the conversation shows, then a chat with someone (or an AI) about what to do.
Side by side
| Clarity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Finding patterns across one whole conversation | Anything: questions, writing, advice, and discussing text you paste |
| Long chats | Imports a full export, even years of messages (it keeps the first 200 and latest 4,800 to read and search) | You paste or upload what you want it to see; very long chats may need to be split |
| Same answer each time | Yes: the same messages give the same score and flags | Answers vary with how you ask and between tries |
| Receipts | Every red flag lists the messages behind it, with dates | Quotes messages if you ask it to |
| Where the reading happens | Pattern detection on your phone; an optional AI report sends a short summary | On OpenAI’s servers |
| Talking it through | Reply help in a calm, firm or kind tone; plain-language AI reports | Open-ended conversation about anything |
When ChatGPT is the better fit
- You want to talk a situation through, ask “what would you do?”, or get help with a hard conversation.
- You only have a few messages and want a quick second opinion.
- You want advice on something beyond the chat itself.
When Clarity is the better fit
- The pattern is the point. One message can be explained away. Clarity counts what keeps happening across the whole conversation and shows when it happened.
- You want receipts. Each flag links to the actual messages, and you can save a dated PDF.
- You'd rather not paste everything into a chatbot. Clarity reads the chat on your phone. If you ask for an AI report, it sends pattern statistics and up to 20 short excerpts, never the full conversation (privacy policy).
- You want the same answer twice. Run it again tomorrow and you get the same result for the same messages.
Using both
A simple way to combine them: let Clarity show you what the whole conversation contains, with the messages behind each flag, then talk through what you want to do, with a friend, a counselor, or an AI assistant.

Questions
Can ChatGPT detect gaslighting in texts?
ChatGPT can discuss messages you paste and may point out manipulation, but its answer depends on what you paste and how you ask. Clarity checks the whole conversation the same way every time and shows the messages behind each pattern it finds.
Is it safe to paste my chats into ChatGPT?
That is your call. OpenAI's help center says you can turn off "Improve the model for everyone" under Settings, then Data controls, so your new conversations are not used to train its models. Clarity reads chats on your phone and sends only a short summary if you ask for an AI report.
Is Clarity just ChatGPT in an app?
No. Clarity's pattern detection is its own and runs on your phone, without a chatbot and without sending your messages anywhere. A chatbot-style AI is only used if you ask for an AI report, and then it receives a short summary, not your conversation.
Is Clarity free?
Clarity checks your first conversation in full for free and includes 3 AI reports. Pro is $12.99 a month or a one-time $99.99 for lifetime access.
